Home Improvement and a Dirty Little Secret

Are you curious? Good. I have you right where I want you. Now you have to suffer through the home improvement diatribe to get to the secret. What? You could just scroll down and read the end first? Well, I know that would make you feel terribly guilty, to undermine me that way. Then again, what if there is no dirty little secret? What if it is a boring secret that you aren't at all interested in? If either of these are true, you will just be disappointed much sooner than if you actually read through all of the home improvement stuff.

Last night I mentioned that Tim and I were working on some projects around the house this weekend. I thought I would share a bit of our progress. When we purchased our home there was a small, yucky enclosed porch on the back of it. We didn't realize it was yucky at the time. I mean, we knew it was small and not particularly attractive, but not actually yucky. Here are some pics of the porch that we took when we were looking at the house in August of 2007:

The first two pictures are of the inside of the porch. They had this set up as a little sitting room. Be sure to note the floral rug. There was also the very strong scent of a Glade Plug-In. The last picture shows the back entrance. These steps were treacherous, but we planned to replace them in the future.Okay, so flash forward about one month and we're taking possession of the house. We go out to the back porch and it doesn't look so good. The floor feels a little soft. There was an unusual amount of rain for this time of year during the month and the next. We put it out of our minds because we have plenty of other things to be concerned about/do. A couple of months later, our attention returns to the porch. It has begun to smell. Apparently, this was the reason for the Glade Plug-In. It was hiding the smell of mold and mildew. The floral rug had another jute rug underneath it. These rugs were masking a floor that was rotting. The ceramic tile was "floating," moving around and the floor was increasingly unstable. Apparently, home inspectors are not permitted to move anything during the inspection. This means that they cannot even move a rug to check out the floor underneath. This is a good thing to know if you are ever planning to buy your first or another house. (Funny story: my mother was once looking at a house in Ohio and the owners had potted plants in a couple of places right in the middle of the living room. My mom moved one and found a hole in the rug underneath!) Anyway, it was clear that the porch was going to have to go. Enter the Bush stimulus. Remember those rebate checks? At the time, I wasn't sure if it was a good idea, but it did come in handy for us! We decided to use this money to replace the porch with a deck. My stepfather is quite handy, so we asked him to help us. He and my mother are renovating a neat old farmhouse, so we traded labor. He also hooked us up with some cheap wood from an Amish mill near his farm. Score! I've included a couple of pics of the progress. We tore off the old porch, but kept the roof in place. For a couple of months it was held in place by two braces. Tim and John did most of the work, but my mom, my nephew Clay, myself and even LB helped out. (Aside: Brennan just brought me a drawing that she made of a "memory card.") By the end of the summer we were mostly finished. I think that the steps might be my favorite part. When the trees have their leaves, it is like walking through a secret forest, sorta. Anyway, the summer came to a close and we still had a few things to do. We are always juggling multiple projects at once, so we didn't finish the deck as we had hoped. Now we get to the point of this long, rambling story. We are back on it this spring. We have a wild cherry tree in the back yard that hangs over a portion of the deck. Last year the cherries, as well as the walnuts that the squirrels drug onto the deck and peeled, stained the deck. Now we have black and reddish stains all over the brand new deck. So, this weekend, we began preparing to bleach and then seal the deck. I don't like to use bleach, but it seems it is the only way to remove the stains. Tim had to remove a broken branch from a river birch because it was "weeping" on the stairs and we had to remove everything from the deck (and under it) and cover it with tarps to protect it. Fun, fun! What will be fun though is seeing the deck restored to its former glory. We also cleaned up more sticks, small branches and leaves that have been littering the yard since the ice storm. We hope to begin the bleaching process tomorrow evening and apply the sealer Wednesday.

Okay, this has been ridiculously long. I can't help myself. When I discuss our house I get overly excited and over share. Brennan has just poured her water into her leftover yogurt and attempted to drink it, spilling yogurt water on the coffee table and floor and is currently tearing up pieces of a tissue. Obviously, I must go. I haven't even touched on the work in the "Brennan Nook" or that dirty little secret. Sorry. I guess you'll just have to check back for more updates. :)

10 Day Challenge

I just added a new card to the shop. I've decided to challenge myself to put up something new every day for ten days. Today is day one. One down and nine to go. Here it is:

It's late, so I'm not going to say much. Tomorrow I plan to post about some of the work we have been doing around the house this weekend. I'm going to share photos as well. Goodnight.

Ugh.

I feel yucky today. I had a headache last night before bed and woke up this morning with some sinus pressure, a headache and absolutely no energy. Hence the "ugh." All I have wanted to do all day is curl up under a blanket on the couch with a cup of tea and sleep. Alas, I am a mommy and don't get sick days. I guess I set myself up for this. I mean, you feed a child, change her diapers and read and play with her every day and she comes to expect it. Demand it in some cases. Then there's the dog. She insists on being walked and fed as well. So, I haven't gotten much couch time today. I guilted myself into doing some dishes and sweeping too. Oh, where are the carefree days of my youth? To be honest, I have no desire to return to my youth. I just like to pretend that I do. On a brighter note, Brennan and Molly (the toddler and the dog) haven't been arguing as much today. Brennan did hit Molly with a book and sippy cup, but, fortunately, Molly didn't throw a water dish back at her or anything. This led to a conversation with LB about hitting and how we should never do it. She seems to make a distinction between humans and other animals that we will have to work on.

I did spend some time today fantasizing about gardening this summer. Last summer was our first in our house and I was on some meds that made me very heat and sun sensitive. Yes, it's probably the one you're thinking about. Anyway, I couldn't stand being outside much and the gardens suffered from it. I would plant something and then neglect it. I have big plans for this summer that involve the Amish greenhouse in Jackson, Ohio, a lot of weeding and, hopefully, not much water. I'm trying to think about water conservation and plant things that don't need a lot of it. Last summer I put a lot of lavender, russian sage and sedum in the front gardens. We're on a busy street and those plants get hit with a lot of dust and sunlight. They did well last year, but didn't grow quite as much as I would like. I was checking out High Country Gardens (http://www.highcountrygardens.com/) today, a company dedicated to xeriscape gardening and came across these little gems:

Silver-Edged Horehound

Silver Nailwart
http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/74878/

Legacy Buffalo Grass
http://www.highcountrygardens.com/catalog/product/27050/

I could definitely get away with the first two, but I don't know about the buffalo grass. I'm not sure that my neighbors would approve. I'd like to maintain good relations. Then again, I do really, really like it.

So LB and Molly are both asleep. I think I'll try to follow their example.

I Asked Politely

Long, long ago I asked LB not to turn into a two year-old. I asked politely, using my "good manners" and pleading tone. Well, she's gone and done it. She turned two in November, and now I'm really feeling it. She lulled me into a false sense of security with her nearly perfect behavior for the last few months. Then, about three weeks ago, it began. I know what you're thinking. I've read all of the parenting mags and books. I know she's testing her boundaries, becoming more independent and frustrated because she can't do everything she wants to do and doesn't know how to express this frustration. It can still be a nightmarish reality. Don't get me wrong. I adore her, worship her even. But she and the puppy are driving me absolutely bonkers! They taunt and tease each other and then act like best friends. Seriously, they argue. I can't explain it, but they do. So, all day today I hear the dog chasing the toddler and then the toddler chasing the dog. Then the toddler decides to yell repeatedly, "that's mine, that's mine, that's mine." The dog backs off and is stunned to see the toddler grab her bone and head for the kennel. Obviously the toddler's attitude is "what's your is mine and what's mine is mine." I guess I'm going to have to ride it out.

Crash Into Me

I've been out of town for a few days, but had hoped to post something while gone. Obviously, that didn't happen. We went to visit family and attend my niece's third birthday party. On the way out of town, we were in an accident with a tractor trailer on the interstate. I am now a true believer in the safety record of Hondas. We were rear-ended at about 60 mph and there were no injuries. The back of the van is crunched and the glass was knocked out, but none of us (including our puppy in the cargo area) were hurt. The driver and sheriff were friendly and non-confrontational, which reduced some of the anxiety. Of course, I flipped out as soon as it was over, but I managed to hold it all together initially. We were able to drive the van back to our house and drove a rental to my parents' house.

Mea's party was a smashing success. Her very creative mommy had a sundae bar instead of cake, including vegan options. I asked LB what she liked best about the party and she said, "ice cream." Now she has been demanding a birthday of her very own. Do you think she's spoiled much? We may have to steal the sundae idea for our next party. Mea's mommy, Paige, is not at all a girly-girl and has never been a fan of pink and purple. Mea has decided to torture her mother with her love of these colors, as well as tutus and princess outfits. She's a riot. Paige made the mistake of asking her which colors she would like for the party and she would only consider pink and purple. I would love to post photos, but I stupidly left my camera at my dad's house. I'll have to share those later. A present of note: my in-laws made a HUGE doll house for Mea. She absolutely loved it, as did my own daughter. I guess I'm finally going to have to dig out the dollhouse from my childhood. Ugh. I have no idea where we will put it. How did we grow out of this house so quickly? Anyway, once I get my cameras back, I'll post photos of the doll house too. I can share a photo of one of the gifts that we gave Mea. We ordered a fantastic faery necklace from a seller on etsy and purchased a faery book to go along with it.

This is the necklace from etsy seller mapetitepapeterie:

I couldn't resist ordering a few more items, including this gorgeous card made from one of his original illustrations:

Check him out if you get the chance. His shop is full of wonderful creations!

So today I'm just trying to get back into the routine and unpack from the trip. I don't know why we travel so much. I hate to pack and unpack. Perhaps I'm a masochist. Speaking of masochism, I guess I need to get back to the gym tomorrow. I've put it off for entirely too long.

Treasury

I've already posted today, but I wanted to let everyone know that one of my cards has been featured in an etsy Treasury. For those of you who don't know what a treasury is, it is a collection of 12 items curated by an etsy member. They are typically based on a theme. The theme of this one is "beauty and the beast." If you'd like to check out the Treasury, here's the link.

This is the featured item.

etsy.com

Okay, I may as well admit it up front. I LOVE etsy. I am absolutely and completely addicted. I love selling, buying, reading the blogs and posting on the community pages. I can't help myself. I think it may be spreading too. My mother-in-law has been spending a fair amount of time browsing various shops! It's a good thing though. More and more I find myself drawn to handmade goods. If I can't make it myself (or don't have the time), I am no longer easily lured into the mall shops to buy something. I would much prefer purchasing an item someone else has taken the time to craft. Street fair season is coming up, so this is a good time to start thinking about gifts you might need throughout the year. However, etsy is always there! So, if you have a chance, take the time to check out etsy.com. In the future, I hope to be featuring some of my favorite shops. Feel free to share yours in the "comments" section. In the meantime, here are some of the items that have sold recently in my shop.
